What is the Pollinator Picnic?
The Pollinator Picnic is a nationwide campaign from Naturehood to get people outside, enjoying their local green spaces and doing something positive to support British wildlife.
This summer, we’re inviting everyone from St Bees and Leighton BUZZard to Beeston and WhitBEE to grab their friends and family and enjoy a picnic whilst raising money for Naturehood.
Why are we doing it?
We’re teaming up with Florette this summer to run the Pollinator Picnic because the UK’s pollinators urgently need our help.
Our pollinators, like bees, butterflies, hoverflies, and beetles, face many threats. These include habitat loss, climate change, toxic pesticides and disease.
Did you know that around 75% of our crops, including many of our everyday fruit and vegetables, require pollinators to reproduce? Without pollination, we wouldn’t be able to grow enough food to eat.
Without our help, numbers of bees and other pollinators will continue to fall which would be a disaster for farming and food production.
Many other animals and plants also depend on insects like pollinators for their survival, such as wildflowers and birds.
And what would nature be without the buzzing of bees or the beauty of butterflies?
How do I take part?
Supporting your local wildlife has never been so easy (or tasty!) all you need to do is:

- Plan your event – prepare for your event with our planning and fundraising resources
- Enjoy – have fun at the event with your guests
- Donate – help support Britain’s wonderful wildlife
We’ve put together a Pollinator Picnic Pack to help you plan your event and raise money to support wildlife. In the pack you’ll have everything you need to host your picnic and how to fundraise as well as information on how you can help pollinators at home.
There’s also a kids activity pack with fun things to keep your little ones entertained throughout the picnic.
Your picnic can be as big or as small as you like, from high tea in the park to a cuppa in the garden – it’s up to you!

How do I organise a Pollinator Picnic?
Here’s a guide to organising your picnic:
- Decide what kind of picnic you’d like to do. A small one with family and friends in your garden or local park? Or something more ambitious, a bigger event at your school or with your local community?
- Next is deciding when and where to host your Picnic. It could be your garden, a local park or playing field, at your school, community centre or place of religious worship.
- Think about how you are going to fundraise and collect donations. You can donate directly to use here, create a fundraising page here for your event or get creative and try other ways to raise money such as a cake sale or raffle.
- Once you’ve nailed down the details, it’s time to promote your Picnic. Print out and put up our event poster, invite your friends, or create an event on Facebook.
- Before the day, decide if you would like to run any games or activities at your Picnic (perhaps go on a Bug Hunt or do the pollinator FIT Count!).

What activities can I get involved in?
There are so many ways you can get involved with the Pollinator Picnic. From having a picnic with family and friends, to fundraising with your community, to planting wildflowers, to counting pollinators and contributing to science.
Here are some ideas to inspire you:
- Get together with family, friends, or colleagues and have a picnic in nature
- Plant pollinator-friendly flowers
- Learn about why pollinators are important and how to identify them
- Take part in the UKPOMS FIT Count survey by recording the pollinators you see
- Fundraise for Pollinator Picnic or donate
- Do some pollinator-themed baking such as bee cupcakes or a caterpillar cake
- Do a Bug Hunt with the kids
- Play the Pollinator Panic! Game
- Encourage the kids to draw or colour in bees and butterflies

How do I fundraise?
Host a Pollinator Picnic, invite family, friends, colleagues or your community and encourage your guests to donate to Naturehood.
You can donate the money you raise directly to Naturehood here or through the JustGiving website. You could even create your own fundraising page on JustGiving and invite everyone you know to support your fundraiser. Or you can set up a fundraiser on Facebook or Instagram.
